New school boundaries worry Lehi parents

AMERICAN FORK — Parents of Lehi students who could be asked to change schools next year are concerned that their children will subjected to a hazardous route on the way to and from classes.

Numerous parents attended Tuesday a meeting of the Alpine School District Board to voice their concerns and ask that their children be allowed to continue attending Eaglecrest Elementary, 2760 N. 300 West, instead of relocating to a new school in northwest Lehi.

The purpose of the meeting was to present a revamped version of boundary plans. The boundary realignments would fill three new elementary schools in Saratoga Springs, Lehi and Highland, and balance while balancing student populations in nine others.

Several public-input meetings have been held since the plans were unveiled in December. Suggestions from parents were incorporated into updated boundary plans.

But the request of Eaglecrest parents to not have their children travel across 1200 West — which is scheduled to soon become a five-lane road — is not part of the new plan.

Those who live in the Pioneer subdivision, which is in the new school's boundaries despite being closer to Eaglecrest, said they understood the need for adjusting boundaries but feared this change would place their children in harm's way.
