Emotional ed issues ahead

Buttars expects to unveil a bill banning gay-straight alliances from public property at the Utah Eagle Forum's convention this weekend. Forum President Gayle Ruzicka says the bill would clarify existing law, which curtails human sexuality discussion in public schools and, as she sees it, leaves no room for a club focusing on a particular mind-set on sexuality.

The alliances were the subject of debate a decade ago, resulting in a ban in Salt Lake City School District. A federal lawsuit ensued, and after a judge's initial ruling, the clubs ban was lifted. Fourteen gay-straight alliances now meet on school campuses, often as service clubs, some principals say.

Utah residents are split on the proposed ban, Dan Jones & Associates found.

Fifty-one percent surveyed say they would oppose a new law prohibiting gay and lesbian student clubs in public schools, even under threat of a court challenge. Forty-six percent somewhat or strongly favor it, and 3 percent don't know.

State Board of Education Chairman Kim Burningham does not favor a ban, citing court rulings.

"As a school board member, we think every child, no matter what their peculiarity or differences may be, is important. And we have to fight for the best possible education for them."
