LONG BEACH, Calif. The Long Beach Ice Dogs used four second period goals to top the Utah Grizzlies 6-2 in the first of four straight meetings between the teams.
Justin Eddy was tested for Utah in the first period as the Ice Dogs put 13 shots on net, while the Grizzlies offense only mustered three shots on Long Beach goalie Jaroslav Halak.
Long Beach got off to a quick start in the second, when Steve Villeneuve sent the puck through traffic and past Eddy to make it 1-0. Just 59 seconds later, Sean McAsland picked up a goal. The Ice Dogs struck again at 10:27; this time it was Mac Faulkner to increase the lead to 3-0. McAsland added another goal at 15:29.
The Grizzlies cut the lead to three when Colt King converted a Travis Rycroft rebound .
The Ice Dogs, however, increased their lead 1:28 into the third period when Christian Larrivee scored. Utah cut the lead again when D.J. Jelitto scored an unassisted goal, but that was all the offense the Grizzlies would come up with despite 14 shots in the final frame.
