Campus notes
SOCCER: The strong season put together by the Weber State women's soccer team this past fall resulted in several post-season awards for the Wildcats.
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Adidas combined to give the 'Cats several awards. Rochelle Hoover, a senior midfielder, was the highest honored of the trio as she was named to the Scholar All-American team as well as the Scholar All-West Region First Team. Also named to the NSCAA Scholar All-West Region teams were Erin Smith and Sarah Espinoza. Smith, a senior defender from Salt Lake City, was named to the region's Second Team. Espinoza, a junior defender from Ogden, was named to the region's Third Team. Smith carries a 3.79 GPA in English Teaching, and Espinoza is a Social Work major with a 3.61 GPA.
VOLLEYBALL: The BYU men's volleyball team will start the 2006 season with two matches against NAIA powerhouse Cal Baptist Friday and Saturday, Jan. 6 and 7 in the Smith Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
With five starters back from a team that finished third in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in 2005, the Cougars have been picked to finish first in the league in 2006. An experienced Cal Baptist squad will be a test for BYU to start the season.
"It's a very good opportunity to play a very good team," BYU coach Tom Peterson said. "They have some very experienced players so it will be a very good test for us and help us get ready for league play."
Peterson is entering his fourth season with BYU. In three years, his record is 72-21, including 20-10 in 2005. In his first season, Peterson took the Cougars to the national championship match where BYU lost to Lewis. The next year, he led the Cougars to a 29-4 record and a national championship win over Long Beach State.
SLCC, Dixie
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The Salt Lake Community College women's basketball team took second place last week in the Las Vegas Classic.
The Bruins, one of eight junior college teams competing lost the championship game on Thursday 68-69 to 18th-ranked Barton County (Kan.). SLCC won its first two games, 83-51 over Cochise (Ariz.) College and 68-65 over No. 11 Southern Idaho. Dixie State won its first game, 79-37 over Black Hawk East (Ill.), before losing 79-64 to Barton County and 78-69 to Southern Idaho.
