PROVO Former mayor George Stewart, known during his administration from 1993-97 as "King George," earned a new title Tuesday, his first day as a member of the City Council.
His fellow council members elected Stewart as council chairman by a vote of 7-0. Cindy Richards, starting her third term on the council, was elected as vice-chairwoman.
Stewart was elected to the council in November and was sworn in Tuesday afternoon. The council chose its leaders Tuesday night.
Cynthia Dayton was council chairwoman in 2005, and Barbara Sandstrom was vice-chairwoman.
