Deborah Bulkeley deserves to be congratulated for the professionalism she showed in writing the article, "Empowering Latinas" (Dec. 27). Deborah called me numerous times to obtain as well as verify information concerning the Hispanic Mother/Daughter Program piloted at Backman Elementary. She also went the extra mile to interview a variety of people associated with the implementation of this program. The result of her work was not only extremely accurate but appealing.
There is an achievement gap no doubt about it. Yet if we, as a community with the help of the media, focus on programs that have proven to be effective, our youths will reap the benefits.
