SAM HOOPES, Duchesne: The Class 1A Eagles are off to an impressive 7-2 start thanks in large part to the play of this 6-foot-5 junior forward.
In games last week against West Desert and North Summit, Hoopes scored 17 and 22 points, respectively, upping his season average to a state-best 24.1 ppg.
Hoopes, who averaged 17.1 points as a sophomore last year, was recently named to the Deseret Morning News all-state football team.
Duchesne is ranked No. 2 in Class 1A heading into region play next week.
ASHLEY MCFARLAND, Layton: Everyone knew this senior could score, but this year she's doing that and so much more.
"She just does everything," said coach Rob Reisbeck. "One thing that's really helped us is how unselfish she is with the ball. She sees the floor well. She's kind of like having a coach on the floor, which is a big help to me."
The guard, who starts for the Lancers' volleyball and softball teams, is averaging 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists and five steals per game. Her play has helped the fourth-ranked Lancers go undefeated heading into region play so far as they try to defend the 5A title.
