Louisville 28, BYU 10: At Memphis, Tenn., playing without star running back Luke Staley, the Cougars, who entered the game leading the nation in scoring, suffered an offensive meltdown in the cold climes of Memphis. BYU's only score came on some trickery, as quarterback Brandon Doman threw a touchdown pass to Dustin Rykert on a tackle-eligible play. The Cougars finished with a 12-2 record in their first season under coach Gary Crowton.

Marshall 21, BYU 3: At Detroit, for the second straight season, the Cougars faced an undefeated team, this time at the Silverdome in Detroit. While Thundering Herd quarterback Chad Pennington was solid, it was the Marshall defense that impressed, limiting the Cougars to minus-16 yards rushing. It turned out to be longtime offensive coordinator Norm Chow's final game calling plays for BYU, and it was coach LaVell Edwards' final bowl appearance.

Tulane 41, BYU 27: The Green Wave entered the game undefeated and had something to prove. They played that way, too, as quarterback Shawn King picked apart the Cougar secondary and rolled up a 34-6 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. BYU, which was without suspended star running back Ronney Jenkins, scored a pair of touchdowns late to make the score somewhat respectable. The loss snapped the Cougars' two-game bowl win streak.

» 1997 COTTON BOWL

BYU 19, Kansas State 15: At Dallas, playing in their first New Year's Day bowl, the No. 5 Cougars engaged in a defensive struggle with Big 12 power Kansas State. At halftime, the Wildcats led, 8-5. BYU trailed 15-5 going into the fourth quarter, where the Cougars scored a pair of touchdowns, including the game-winner on a 28-yard touchdown strike from Steve Sarkisian to K.O. Kealaluhi. BYU sealed the victory when cornerback Omarr Morgan intercepted a KSU pass on a slant pattern at the 12-yard line.

» 1994 COPPER BOWL

BYU 31, Oklahoma 6: At Tucson, Ariz., the Cougars snapped their five-game bowl losing streak with a convincing victory over the Sooners. In what would be his final game in a BYU uniform, quarterback John Walsh passed for 454 yards and four touchdowns while the Cougar defense held the Oklahoma offense scoreless for three quarters.
