PROVO The U.S. Forest Service is increasing patrols in areas where problems with snowmobilers riding in restricted areas have been reported.
The patrols will be in wilderness areas in Uinta and Wasatch-Cache national forests.
Wilderness areas are designated by Congress to limit human interaction to "primitive recreation and minimum tools," according to a U.S. Forest Service statement. Snowmobiles are not allowed.
The increased patrols will be in areas where there have been reports of "high-marking," in which snowmobilers challenge themselves to ride as high as possible on steep slopes.
People can report snowmobilers in violation of the law by calling the Pleasant Grove Ranger District during business hours at 801-785-3563.
Snowmobilers can download free maps of snowmobile routes at www.fs.fed.us/r4/uinta.
As with all-terrain vehicle routes, people must assume all snowmobile routes are closed unless designated open. Routes are opened when there is 12 inches of base snow.
