LDS Church to celebrate birth of founder

BIRTHDAY BASH: The Latter-day Saints celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of their church founder, Joseph Smith Jr.

WHERE: Joseph Smith was born Dec. 23, 1805, in Sharon, Vt. In 1905 the LDS Church bought the land where Joseph Smith was born and established a memorial at the site.

WHAT: A television broadcast will originate from the birthplace Friday. President Gordon B. Hinckley of the church will be at the Vermont site. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir will provide music from the church's conference center in Salt Lake City.

HOW TO WATCH: The broadcast will be beamed to church sites around the world and can be viewed via streaming video on the church's Internet site. It will also be carried by several satellite television providers.
