Harley-Davidson's Ultra Classic Electra Glide.

Jeffrey D. Allred, Deseret Morning News

Every year, around this time, panic begins to set in. What to buy for the active man or woman for Christmas?

Well, a check of some of the sporting and outdoor stores around the valley came up with a list of some of the more popular items being pulled off the shelves.

They include:

Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide Motorcycle . . . This is the dream bike of today's motorcycle rider — it features AM/FM radio, CD, cruise control, intercom, heated seats and grips, full fairing, saddlebags, weather band access, separate sound system for the passenger and drive, and a 1,450 cc engine for quick response and comfort. Price: $21,395.

Fishpond Doublehaul Pack . . . Has removable front compartment that can be worn separately or, when attached, as a whole backpack. Great day pack because it can hold enough gear and accessories to service a day of fishing. Comes with interior hydration pack and zip-down fly bench. It is lightweight, durable and has air-mesh backing for added comfort on hot days. Price: $119.

Waterdance Guide Pack . . . When the fly-fisherman is busy casting and stripping the line, accessories need to be close at hand. The Guide Pack can be a chest pack or fanny pack. It has three compartments, one a built-in fly holder that folds out for easy visibility and access. Price: $89.

Winston Vapor Fly Rod . . . Winston has come up with a new four-piece rod at a price below that of comparable rods. It has nickel/silver components and hardwood handle. Available in weights 3 to 10 and lengths 7 1/2 to 10 feet. Price: $279.

Rio Accelerator Flyline . . . One problem fly-fishermen sometimes have as flylines age is the "sinking tip" of the floating line. Glass beads used to keep the tip up break

with time. Rio has found a way to put a low density plastic near the tip of the line. This makes the line more durable and keeps the tip and the dry fly on the surface. Price: $58.

Wood Landing Net . . . Studies show that mesh-type nets can be hard for the angler and the fish. Hooks can become caught, thus making the release difficult. New nets come with a rubber bag that makes the release quick and easy. Nets come with a wood frame. Price: $80-$150.

Ross Flywater Reel . . . This is a durable, quality aluminum fly reel that is lightweight and features a very smooth action. Comes in a platinum and black finish, three sizes, adjustable drag, interchangeable spools and attractive price tag. Price: $99.
