Tony Yapias, former director of the state Office of Hispanic Affairs, has been appointed as director of Scoutreach for the Great Salt Lake Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
Steve Luna, director of field service, said Yapias has two years experience as Hispanic Affairs director and nine years as a probation officer for the 3rd District Juvenile Court.
"Our goal is to reach every youth in our community, especially the Latino and ethnic minorities," Luna said. "Tony brings a tremendous background in youth and community service and will be instrumental in helping us serve youth who have not had the opportunities of the Scouting Program."
The Scoutreach Division gives special leadership and emphasis to disadvantaged and ethnic minorities.
Yapias will continue to develop Scoutreach programs such as Cub Scout soccer and after-school programs.
