Weber State football recap

Published: Tuesday, Dec. 6 2005 10:37 a.m. MST

Record: 6-5 (5-3 Big Sky)

Team MVP: Senior defensive end Brady Fosmark closed out his WSU career in style with 66 tackles, eight sacks and 15 1/2 tackles for lost yardage. The Clearfield native anchored a line that was among the best in the Big Sky at stopping the run.

High point: After dropping games against both Montana schools, the Wildcats rebounded to win three straight and make a late run at the conference title. A 28-23 win at top-25 ranked Eastern Washington was as sweet a win as the 'Cats have had in a few years.

Low point: With a share of the Big Sky title and a possible spot in the I-AA playoffs within reach, Weber State traveled to Portland State and proceeded to get thumped. The 39-14 loss to the Vikings ended any championship hopes and snapped a three-game win streak.

Key losses: Shane Barkdull, DT; Fosmark, DE; Dallas Drecksel, S; John McBride, S; Eric Jones, LB; Paul McQuistan, OL; Lynzell Jackson, WR; Pat McQuistan, OL; Joe Johnson, K; Wyatt Kennah, P.

Key returnees: Zach Hall, RB; Adrian Conway, RB; Ian Pizarro, QB; Chad Glover, C; David Hale, OL; Terry Larsen, WR; Drew Dukeshire, TE; Derek Johnson, DL; Brad Stewart, LB; Tyler DeBry, LB

Looking ahead: McBride has some big holes to fill on defense but has a nice group of players back offensively. With his extensive contacts throughout the state and region, McBride should have no problem finding some of those hidden gems in the region to plug those holes, especially on the defensive line and in the secondary. Pizarro will be back at quarterback, while Hall and Conway combined for nearly 1,500 yards rushing. The Wildcats also need to replace their kicker and punter, not to mention the left side of the offensive line and two of the top three receivers.
