This holiday, give while you buy

Published: Friday, Dec. 2 2005 12:00 a.m. MST

Put your holiday shopping to work for a good cause today with two Utah gift shops that will donate a portion of their proceeds to the Utah Humanities Council.

Ten Thousand Villages in Sugar House and Global Village Gifts in Logan will donate 20 percent of all sales to support council programs. The stores are nonprofit, fair-trade organizations that feature the work of low-income artisans in third-world countries.

The program marks the second year the gift shops have collaborated with the Utah Humanities Council, a nonprofit cultural agency that was established in 1975.

Ten Thousand Villages is located at 2186 S. Highland Drive. The address of Global Village Gifts is 146 N. 100 East in Logan.

Utahns who have performed special acts of kindness will be rewarded this holiday season by Harmons grocery stores.

Each week, each Harmons store will select a nominee to receive a $100 gift card to one of up to 30 retailers, including Bed, Bath & Beyond, Sears, Barnes & Noble and Olive Garden. Winners will also be entered to win a $500 American Express gift card. "We wanted to make the holidays extra special for some deserving individuals who go out of their way to help others," said Bob Harmon, vice president of marketing for the locally owned grocery chain. "We know there are many unsung heroes out there who quietly step in to make life better for family, neighbors, friends and the community at large."

Nomination forms are available at all Harmons stores and will be accepted until Dec. 14.

A Kaysville chiropractor will donate his time on Saturday in exchange for donations from his would-be patients.

In exchange for canned goods and toiletries to benefit the Utah Food Bank, Dr. Todd Grant will provide free exams and treatment to new and existing patients with headaches, back pain and other spinal-related conditions.

Those interested are invited to stop by Grant Chiropractic, 280 W. 200 North in Kaysville, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Free chiropractic services are offered on Saturday only, but the food drive continues through Dec. 23.
