George Harmond Jr., a longtime deputy Carbon County attorney, has been nominated by Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. to serve as a judge in Utah's 7th District Court.
The district includes Carbon, Emery, Grand and San Juan counties.
Harmond has been a county prosecutor for all but two years since 1987. Harmond also has been in private legal practice in southeastern Utah, worked as general counsel for several organizations that deal with water rights, and served as an adjunct instructor at the College of Eastern Utah from 1993-97. Harmond also is city attorney for Wellington and East Carbon.
Harmond, who lives in Helper, also has worked for Mountain States Machinery & Supply in Price since 1974 and currently is the firm's president.
The governor's appointment will now go before the Senate Confirmation Committee, which reviews nominees and conducts public hearings and interview sessions. The full Senate will then consider Harmond for confirmation.
