OREM The Utah Valley State women's basketball team defeated visiting Westminster College 65-60 Tuesday.
Miriam Palkki led the Wolverines (2-2) with 15 points. Freshman Sandy Marvin added 13 points and three assists for UVSC.
"It obviously was not a very pretty game," Utah Valley coach Cathy Nixon said. "I told the kids that sometimes you just grind it out and win ugly, and that was exactly what I thought tonight was."
Marvin sank a pair of free throws and nailed a jumper to fuel an 8-0 run five minutes into the game that put the Wolverines ahead 14-6.
Westminster battled back with a 9-0 run of its own to retake the lead at 15-14.
With the two teams tied at 21-21 late in the first half, UVSC surged ahead to a 31-25 halftime lead.
The Griffins managed to tie the game at 37-37, but a few minutes later UVSC center Robyn Fairbanks sank two straight shots to extend the Wolverines' lead to 58-48.
The rest of the way, Westminster's comeback attempts proved fruitless.
