OGDEN Weber State sophomore Chelsey Warburton came off the bench for a season-high 22 points and Sara Tuomi added 16 points as the Weber State women's basketball team erased a halftime deficit and pulled out a 72-63 win over UC Santa Barbara Monday night at the Dee Events Center.
The win improves Weber State's record to 2-2.
The Gauchos led for most of the first half, leading by as many as seven points at one point, and held a 32-28 lead at the break. In the second half Weber State responded and came out shooting, making seven three-pointers in the second half. WSU took the lead for good at 48-46 with 12:40 remaining after one of Warburton's six three pointers. The six threes is a career-high and just one off the WSU school record.
After that three the 'Cats went on a 19-8 run over the next ten minutes to put the game out of reach.
"That was a good home win for us and it was a good confidence booster," said WSU head coach Carla Taylor. "We made a lot of good adjustments during the game and I was pleased with the way our younger players responded and adjusted. Chelsey is gaining a lot of confidence after coming back from an injury and wants to be out on the court. Hopefully we can build off this win."
Weber State shot 48 percent from the field and held UCSB to 38 percent shooting. Junior Laura Porter had a career-high with 11 assists in the game, to go along with seven points. Freshman Janie Rayback had a career-high with six points. The Wildcats made nine three-pointers on the night.
The 'Cats will continue their home stand this Thursday when they host Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m.
