OREM (AP) Ben Devoe had 21 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots to lead Utah Valley State to an 82-69 victory over Western Illinois Tuesday night.
Matt Peterson added 13 points and five rebounds for UVSC (2-2).
Western Illinois (1-1) took a 6-2 lead in the opening minutes, but Utah Valley went on a 19-1 run to go ahead 21-7 and the Wolverines led by at least nine points the rest of the game.
Peterson scored nine points during the run, including a four-point play where he got fouled while making a 3-pointer.
UVSC led at halftime 37-25.
The Leathernecks cut the Utah Valley lead to 42-33 early in the second half. The Wolverines responded with a 24-10 surge, taking their largest lead of the game at 66-43.
Western Illinois forward Fred Oguns led all scorers with 21 points. David Jackson added 19 for the Leathernecks, with 13 of his points coming in the second half.
For the game, UVSC shot 52 percent while holding Western Illinois to a 42 percent mark.
Sylvester Allison and Tika Wesley each scored 11 points for the Wolverines.
