$62 million approved for Utah military bases

The House and Senate has approved $62 million to military installations in Utah. Hill Air Force Base will receive $33.9 million of the money.

The measure has been sent to the White House and awaits signatures to be signed into law.

"Utah's military installations play a critical role in the overall mission of the United States Armed Services, and will continue to advance our military readiness," said Utah Sen. Bob Bennett, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. "I remain committed to supporting Utah bases and am pleased my colleagues recognize our state's important contributions."

Among the Bennett-requested projects in the conference report for the Fiscal Year 2006 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill are:

• Software Support Facility Addition, HAFB: $19.5 million — Double the current capacity of the two-story, 72,500-square-foot Hill's Software Support Facility.

• Michael Army Airfield, Phase 2, Dugway Proving Ground: $25 million — Constructing a new 11,000-foot by 150-foot Class B runway and demolish the existing runway. Also, new electrical vault to house airfield lighting and power equipment.

• Consolidated Missile Storage Facilities, HAFB: $9.8 million — Consolidate 43 missile storage igloos into three new storage facilities.

• F/A-22 Aircraft Battle Damage Repair Training/Storage: $4.6 million — Assist in repair and storage of the F/A-22s.

• New Readiness Center, Camp Williams: $3.3 million — Construct a readiness center to house the new 144th Army Field Evacuation Hospital Unit.
