GRADE C

Offense

The Cougars posted 31 points on five of their first six possessions in the second half, needing fewer than two minutes in each drive to score. John Beck passed for 309 yards and Curtis Brown rushed for 153. But for more than half the game, the Cougars' execution and play-calling never seemed to really click with much continuity.

GRADE C-

Defense

BYU pressured Ute QB Brett Ratliff but couldn't contain him. The "D" did slow Quinton Ganther late, but not before he'd rushed for more than 100 yards in the first half. The Utes made numerous big-play passes — including the overtime game-winner. BYU had no takeaways after logging multiple ones in each of the past few games.

GRADE B

Special teams

Story continues below
A couple of decent returns, but all three U. kickoff returns were 23 to 40 yards. Derek McLaughlin's punting average was sub-40 yards, but two were inside the 20. Jared McLaughlin was 2-for-2 on field goals (31, 37 yards), while the Cougars blocked a low FG attempt. For the first time in several games, this wasn't the Cougars' weakest link.

GRADE C

Overall

The Cougars didn't need their "A" game Saturday, but with the banged-up Utes playing near-perfect with no turnovers and plenty of offensive explosion, it needed at least a "B" effort on both sides of the ball.
