Cravens blasts 'Cats for lackluster effort
One game into the year, the coach said team unity is at a good level, but it appears WSU is being too generous on the defensive end of the court. Following the Wildcats' 77-66 victory over NAIA Montana- Western on Friday, Cravens said he was disgusted with WSU's defensive effort and preparation.
"If we were all going on a camping trip, I think it'd be a great group to be around. But we're trying to win games," Cravens said. "If I wanted to be the head of a Boy Scout troop, I'd quit this and go do something else. We've got to play harder, we've got to compete. We're just not as a whole doing that, and I'm very concerned."
At least the Wildcats (1-0) can say they are still undefeated when playing NAIA Montana-Western (2-6). WSU has leads the overall series with the Bulldogs, 8-0. Weber State plays at Boise State on Monday.
Despite shooting fairly well and winning the game, there was no end to Cravens' criticism of the Wildcats' defensive effort.
Senior Coric Riggs, who led the team with 19 points and 13 rebounds, admitted the team made mistakes, but believes the miscues can be corrected with time.
"We're were a little sluggish out there, but we got the win. We made some mistakes . . . but it's the first game of the season.
In addition to Riggs, Dan Henry scored 13 points and Terrell Stovall added 12. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Tyler Palmer, who scored 26.
Following the game's only tie was at 4-4, Weber State went on a 9-0 run and never looked back. At the half the Cats led 44-33. Montana Western cut the lead to 74-64 with around two minutes to go, but didn't come any closer.
