JIMMY CARTER, 39th president of the United States and author of "Our Endangered Values," will sign copies of his book, Tuesday, 6 p.m., Barnes & Noble, 1102 E. 2100 South, Sugar House.

ANN CORAY, an Alaska-born poet and author of the debut collection, "Bone Strings," will read from her work at a City Art-sponsored pre-turkey poetry night, Wednesday, 7 p.m., Salt Lake City Main Library, 210 E. 400 South.

UTAH BOOK AWARDS for 2005 will honor four books judged to best represent the literary culture of Utah in fiction, nonfiction, poetry and children's/youth literature. The competition is open to Utah authors and authors of books with a Utah theme or setting. Deadline for entries is Dec. 9. Winners will be announced in May 2006 at the Utah Library Association's annual conference in St. George. Entry forms are available online, www.slcpl.org or call the City Library at 524-8200.

THE 2006 SALT LAKE INSTITUTE OF GENEALOGY will hold its annual conference, Jan. 9-13, at the LDS Family History Library. Classes will be offered on Scottish research and Eastern European research, but in-depth study of U.S. research will be included. Nationally known instructors will be featured.
