The city had planned to send a letter to the affected residents telling them they had 45 days to fix the problem, but since it has been put on the council agenda, the city has decided to wait to see what the council decides.

Luebbers said much of the residents' outrage over the issue is because of misinformation.

"Unfortunately what happens is there's a story out there that the sewer line was hooked up wrong and it costs $10,000 to fix it," he said. "Well, that's not anywhere close to true."

He said the $10,000 it cost Chapman included the cost of fixing the sewer line — something owners of old homes always have to take care of — and replacing carpet damaged by the sewage flooding. He did not have estimates on the costs related to correcting the hookup mistake but said the council will be presented with that information Tuesday.
