Missions not like 'God's Army'

Lee Benson (Nov. 11) hails Richard Dutcher as a fine first example of quality Mormon filmmaking. He finds the warts-and-all portrayal of Mormon missionaries in "God's Army" true to (his) life. I served an LDS mission. My mission president was not the stuffed-shirt bozo portrayed by Dutcher. Neither were the elders prone to quit and go home, practice bathroom humor or harass new elders. If that's what they did in Lee's mission, too bad. "God's Army" portrays the opposite of what we were taught, that no one can "turn the spirit on and off like a light bulb" — be sordid one moment and sacred the next.
