Early-morning West Jordan fire results in $150,000 in damage

WEST JORDAN — No one was hurt, but two homes sustained a total of $150,000 in damage early Sunday when a fire started in a wood pile between the two homes.

The two-alarm fire began about 2 a.m. and was extinguished within 30 minutes by firefighters from the West Jordan, South Jordan, Midvale and Sandy fire departments.

The two-story homes are located at 1320 W. 9220 South and 1340 W. 9220 South.

West Jordan Fire Department battalion chief Marc McElreath said the cause of the fire is being investigated but is believed to be accidental. Investigators are looking into the possibility that the fire may have been started by "discarded cigarette material," he said.

Someone in a car driving past the homes noticed the fire and alerted the residents, who were able to get out safely, McElreath said.

McElreath said the home at 1320 W. 9220 South sustained the bulk of the damage, about $90,000, much of it to the garage and side of the home. The sheeting on the outside of the house at 1340 W. 9220 South was burned off, he said.
