Utah Hall of Fame adds 6

Six inductees will join the Utah Sports Hall of Fame this month. Elaine Michaelis, Doug Palazzari, Amy Palmer, John Robison and Paul Ream are the Class of 2005.

Michaelis, a Bear River High School graduate, posted an 886-225-5 record in 40 years as Brigham Young's volleyball coach before retiring in 2002. She was a charter inductee into the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. BYU's volleyball venue was recently named Michaelis Court.

Palazzari joined the Salt Lake Golden Eagles of the Central Hockey League in 1977 and led the team to two Adams Cup championships, besides winning two league MVP awards. He ranked as the franchise's career scoring leader when he finished playing in 1982. Palazzari recently retired as the executive director of USA Hockey.

A Grantsville High graduate, Palmer was a six-time All-American at BYU as a shot putter and hammer thrower. She won 12 conference titles and broke the NCAA record in the hammer. She finished eighth in the hammer in the 2000 Olympic Games at Sydney.

Robison, who graduated from Granite High and the University of Utah, has worked 32 years as a high school, college and pro football official. An assistant principal at Bountiful Junior High, Robison worked as a back judge in the NFL, officiating an AFC championship game.

Ream is best known for establishing the Great American Shootout, a charitable golf tournament that has raised millions of dollars for Native American causes, notably college scholarships. A grocer who grew up in Milford and graduated from Provo High, Ream also provides eight $2,000 scholarships annually through the Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation, with two designated for Native Americans. Provo City created Paul Ream Avenue for his contributions to youth baseball and other causes.

The induction dinner is scheduled Nov. 17 at the Delta Center, which houses the Utah Sports Hall of Fame. Tickets are $35. For reservations, contact Scott Mayne at (801) 253-7361.
