A portion of Parleys Historic Nature Park at the mouth of Parleys Canyon is going off-leash.
The park is the first to include an off-leash dog area under new rules the City Council passed last year that made it easier for groups to create off-leash parks.
Millcreek Friends Interested in Dogs and Open Space have agreed to conduct cleanup and educational efforts for the new off-leash area, Salt Lake City Department of Public Services Shelia Yorkin said.
City staffers will patrol the area for the next year examining if the area is kept clean and if off-leash rules are followed. If things run smoothly the off-leash area will become permanent, Yorkin said. The off-leash portion of the nature park will be marked by signs, she said.
Tanner Park, 2700 E. 2760 South, the developed park on the south rim of the nature park, will remain an on-leash area.
