On the street

In a recent nationwide poll Utahns gave President Bush the highest approval rating of any state. But the past week has been a politically difficult one for the president on several fronts. Early in the week, the United States suffered its 2,000th military casualty in Iraq. On Thursday, Bush's nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court, Harriet Miers, withdrew her name from consideration. And Friday, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, was indicted on perjury and obstruction of justice charges. Have these recent events done anything to shake your support of the president?

"Not particularly, because I'm not a fan of Bush. I respect the office, but I don't like the way he is running his presidency. I voted against him." Karen Shaffer, Salt Lake City

"I'm torn because some of the decisions he has made are good and others are not. I personally think he did a good job with Hurricane Katrina. He did a really good job with September 11th. Maybe some of the decisions he's made recently aren't so good."Shauna Boyce, Sandy

"I think it's an embarrassment. I feel he should face impeachment charges for going to war based on a lie. I'm a little embarrassed that Utah has such blind allegiance to a president who is making mistake after mistake."April Durrant, Sandy

"I'm not sure my opinion has changed dramatically. Perhaps he places too much confidence in those on his staff." Mark Feinauer, Salt Lake City

"I don't think it's changed as a result of anything recently. I believe his selection of Miers was wrong. 2,000 deaths is 2,000 deaths, but in the scheme of things, that's not very many." Richard Lawrence, Centerville

"I pretty much always had the same opinion. Things I felt about him before are being validated. I don't think he's the right person to run the country. I don't think he has everyone's best interests at heart."Ruby Barnes, Salt Lake City
