OGDEN — With the graduation of all-Big Sky center Lance Allred, the Wildcat nation can expect a new offensive look on the court from Weber State this year.

Fans got their first glimpse of the 2005-06 men's team Wednesday night at the Dee Events Center when the squad squared off in the annual Purple and White scrimmage. The Whites defeated the Purples, 30-28. Terrell Stovall led the Purples with seven points and Brett Cox led the Whites with nine. Matt Emadi and redshirt transfer Tyler Jones each had eight points for the Whites.

WSU coach Joe Cravens, now embarking on his seventh season with the Wildcats, said this is the first team he's coached in Ogden that doesn't have a pure center.

"We're running a completely new offense this year that we think fits our personnel," WSU coach Joe Cravens. "(Tonight was) not a thing of beauty, obviously. It looked like a preseason scrimmage. We've got to be a lot sharper offensively."

The Wildcats are coming off a season where they went 14-16 overall and 7-7 in the Big Sky, Weber's first losing season since 1990-91. At one point, the 2004-05 team was 5-11 before generating momentum to finish the season losing to Montana in the Big Sky tournament championship game. Cravens believes this year's team is already farther along than the team was a year ago at this point.

"Me and you and three town drunks could have been further of that team last year. We were dysfunctional," Cravens said. "I think we'll be an good offensive team."

The coach doesn't think it will be hard for the Wildcats to learn the new offense. However, his biggest concern Wednesday was that the team took "a multitude of bad shots."

"That certainly has to be straightened out. It was our first time under the lights and I think some guys got a little anxious and decided let's take the first shot available," Cravens said. "There is not shortage of things we need to work on out there."

Players on the team like the new offense. David Patten and Coric Riggs both agree it allows players to use their skills.

"It doesn't run through one person. Everyone has an opportunity to post up or take a three or drive to the basket," Patten said.

The new team returns seven lettermen, adds a redshirt transfer and three junior college transfers. Danko Barisic, Matt Emadi, Juan Pablo Silveira, Cox, Patten, Riggs and Stovall are back. The new additions include Clint Burris from Olney Junior College in Illinois, Chauncey Shelton from Toledo, Nick Covington from S.W. Tennessee JC, Nedim Pajevic from Santa Ana JC and Dan Henry from Snow College. Jones, a transfer from St. Johns, will redshirt this season.

The Wildcats lost Allred, starter Troy Goodell and Jamaal Jenkins. Jenkins will not return because he was ruled academically ineligible for his senior season. The Wildcats open the season on Nov. 18 when they host Montana-Western.
