OGDEN — Another year, another win.

In more than 30 years and 48 matches the results have never varied when BYU plays Weber State in a women"s volleyball match. Tuesday night at the Dee Events Center was no different as the No. 13 Cougars defeated the Wildcats in three games, 30-17, 30-27 and 30-23.

The win moves BYU to 19-0 in their best start since 1977 when the Cougars went 23-0 before dropping a match. The loss marks three straight for Weber State and drops the Wildcats to 10-13 overall. WSU coach Al Givens gave the BYU credit in the victory. "There's a reason they are 19-0 and ranked. It's like you slow one hitter down and a couple more come at you," Givens said. "I think the biggest thing is that they are a lot longer than we are. The matchup in the front row, their middle going over our small center, caused a lot of problems."

Givens felt the Cats contained Cougar's middle blocker Lindsy Hartsock but then lost track of Chelsea Goodman and Rachel Dyer. Goodman finished with 14 kills and Dyer had 11. For the match, the Cougars recorded 53 kills to Weber State"s 33. BYU also posted more digs than WSU, 50-36.

The Wildcats came close to winning the second game, and hung with the Cougars in the third game, but in the end BYU was just too much. Cougars coach Jason Watson was very pleased with his front row's output and ability to serve.

"I was very pleased with the production out of Hartsock and Dyer. That was an area where we needed an upgrade," Watson said. "I was very pleased with our serving. This is not an easy environment to come in and serve well in."

Then there is the matter of the streak. Tuesday's match between the two schools was typical of the all-time series. Since Weber State started Division I volleyball in 1974, BYU has been victorious in all 48 matches.

The Cougars remain the only team the Wildcats have played more than 10 times and never defeated.

In 31 years, WSU has only taken BYU to the full five games on two occasions, the last time being 1989. In the overall series Weber State has only won a total of five games against BYU. Watson downplayed the streak.

"We don't look at that streak as much as our opponent. We also knew they were 7-1 (at home) with us coming in here, so each year poses different challenges. We don't really worry about it that much," Watson said.

Givens said defeating the Cougars is only a matter of time. "We're going to keep playing until we get that donut off. I would play them five times if I could this year, because eventually we're going to beat them. It can't go on forever," Givens said.

The Cougars' next match is on Friday at TCU. The Wildcats host Big Sky Conference foe Idaho State on Saturday.
