A father and son who failed to return home on time from a Sunday hike in Little Cottonwood Canyon were found safe early Monday.
A 50-year-old man and his 10-year-old son left their home about 7 a.m. Sunday to hike the White Pines Trail, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Paul Jaroscak.
When the two failed to return home by 2:20 a.m. Monday, the mother called search and rescue.
A helicopter from the Department of Public Safety found the two sitting near a campfire about two miles up the trailhead about 6:30 a.m.
The two apparently thought it was getting too dark by the time they ended their hike Sunday and planned on hiking out Monday at daybreak.
