Ten Utah teachers have received the Utah Education Association's Excellence in Teaching Award, which comes with a $1,000 check.
They are: Anne Black, Bennion Junior High; Lauren Flygare, West Jordan Middle School; Kathryn Hill, West Desert Elementary; Theresa Mbaku, West High; Sande Montano, Timpanogos Elementary; Jim Nelson, Ephraim Middle School; Sally Ogilvie, Syracuse Elementary; Lori Ruth, Utah School for the Deaf; Laren Swensen, Juab High; and Kimball Thurgood, Mountain Crest High.
The awards, bestowed this week at the UEA's "Superstars in Education" banquet, are sponsored by R.C. Willey Home Furnishings.
Also honored were two UEA Honor Roll recipients. Ila Rose Fife, former Salt Lake City Board of Education member, was honored for her public education advocacy. Brent Goodrich, general manager of Utah Idaho Supply & Map World stores, was recognized for offering $50 gift certificates to Wasatch Junior High teachers to offset losses from a fire at that school.
