HALE CENTRE THEATRE, 3333 S. Decker Lake Drive, West Valley City, on Thursday, 6-8 p.m. for Larry Shue's comedy, "The Nerd," directed by David Nieman and scheduled to run Dec. 31-Feb. 11 (by appointment only, 984-9000).
Needed are men, 30-50 years of age, and women, 20-30 and 40-50. Also needed is one boy, 8-11 years of age. All auditioners must come prepared with a 59-second monologue. There will also be cold readings from the script. Bring a current photograph and resume. All roles are open and may be double-cast.

THE UTAH SHAKESPEAREAN FESTIVAL, Cedar City, on Nov. 1, 6-10 p.m. in the Randall L. Jones Theatre, for its second-annual holiday production of "A Christmas Carol: On the Air," co-directed by Peter Sham and Brad Carroll.
Needed are men and women, 18 to 70 years of age, for a number of roles, and one boy, 8-14, for the role of Tiny Tim. Also women, 18-25, who sing and move well, are needed for The Carrollettes, an Andrews Sisters-style singing group. Local musical acts either solo or group are needed for various entertainment segments of the radio-style show.
Auditioners should come prepared to read from the script. Female singers and solo performers must present no more than 16 bars of a standard Christmas or pop song. An accompanist will be provided. Group musical acts will be interviewed and may leave a CD of their work for consideration.
Performances will be Dec. 9-19, including two matinees on Dec. 10 and 17.
ACADEMY THEATRE COMPANY, 3188 S. 400 East, Nov. 1-2, 6 to 9 p.m., for "Aladdin" (898-2728).
Adapted for the stage by Collin Kreuzer, performers of all ages and types are invited to audition. There will be cold readings from the script. Play dates are Jan. 6-Feb. 4.
HALESTORM ENTERTAINMENT is holding an open-casting contest for children 3-7 years of age, to star in a new DVD commercial for "Howdy Town: Vol. 1." Entries are welcome through Nov. 4, when 10 winners will be selected from a random drawing. Winners must be able to get to and from Orem for the on-location filming.
