• Now's the time to plant all of the spring-flowering bulbs. None of these will bloom well if you plant them in the spring.

• Fall control is essential on all deep-rooted perennial weeds. Spray them before they freeze back. This allows the herbicide to translocate to the roots and rhizomes, which then kills the weeds. Treat field bindweed, wild violets, quackgrass and tall fescue while the foliage is still green and actively growing.

• The Utah Orchid Society is teaching a class on "The Elegance of Orchids," Oct. 29, 10 a.m.-noon, at Red Butte Garden. Learn about the fascinating world of orchids and which ones are best suited for our home environment. Regular garden admission applies; members get in free. No registration is required.
