After moving to Utah, he received degrees in historic preservation and architecture, then found the perfect job: As a state archivist, he helps owners of historic property uncover the stories behind their unique dwellings.

"New homes are nice, but to me, they feel so sterile," says Alan, who first spotted his old house while driving past it on I-15. "Over time, things gain warmth and character. When you walk into an old house, you can feel a sort of dignity."

Although he feels lucky to have found his own place, he admits there are days when he cringes, coming home from work. There are more walls to knock out, more fixtures to replace, and the electrical system and plumbing are in need of attention.

"It's like living in a construction zone," says Alan," but I can't lose sight of the vision." He's hopeful that by retirement he'll be able to kick off his boots and relax in a clutter-free room, just like Thomas Hepworth in 1882.

Those interested in signing up for Alan Barnett's free class on historic home research can call 801-533-3500.
