A $2 million grant has been awarded to the Community Transportation Development Center, which will use the funds to address the need for skilled workers in Utah, four other states and Washington, D.C.
The Department of Labor announced the grant award Monday.
Systems will be created for apprenticeship, training and skill certification for bus mechanics, rail mechanics, rail signal maintainers, elevator/escalator technicians and equipment maintainers, the department said. As a result, a national apprenticeship system for bus mechanics will be created, and 3,338 people will begin to receive transit maintenance training based on national standards developed through the initiative.
The other states getting funds for the CTDC are Georgia, Oregon, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
