CLEARFIELD — With about a minute to go in the fourth quarter and Clearfield trailing Northridge by two touchdowns, coach Randy Johnson still hadn't given up. Before they had even scored, he told an assistant coach to get the onside-kick team ready.

Apparently, neither had the team. The Falcons miraculously scored 14 points in a matter of seconds and even had a chance to win the game in regulation.

Despite a missed field goal, Clearfield would not be denied in overtime as the Falcons pulled out a 21-14 victory over the stunned Knights.

The victory secures a playoff spot for the Falcons (3-6, 3-2) and could knock Northridge (3-5, 2-3) out.

After failing to produce much offensively the entire game, Casey Hill hit Mitch Scholer for a 5-yard touchdown to make it 14-7 with 47 seconds remaining. Clearfield then converted an onside kick, with Garrett Vaughn coming up with the ball. A Northridge personal foul gave the Falcons the ball on the Knights' 25-yard line, and on the very next play, Hill found Scholer again for a touchdown. The Mike Cook extra point was good and the game was tied with 32 seconds to go.

"We came together as a team and made the plays," Hills said of the scoring scramble.

After Northridge took the ball, Sean Acord was intercepted by senior Shane Meehan, his second pick of the game, who returned it to the Knights' 24. Following a Jordan Paskett 12-yard run and a timeout, Clearfield was in position to win the game on a 29-yard field goal with five seconds to go, but Cook's kick was wide right.

"That is the first time he's missed a field goal or PAT all year long," Johnson said. "He's money."

Despite the miss, the momentum clearly stayed with the Falcons. It only took Clearfield five plays to score, capped by a 6-yard pass from Hill to Cameron Evan. The Knights drive didn't even last two plays before Acord was intercepted again, this time by Tyson Bullard. The team and fans stormed the field.

Johnson was almost speechless. "I don't know. It happened so fast at the end, I can't explain it. I don't know what to say," he said. "I'm very proud of these boys for not giving in. They could have folded the tent but they battled back."

The Knights' sideline was shell-shocked, and players walked around with dazed expressions on their faces following the loss. Northridge had led the entire game after scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter. It even mounted a goal-line stand right before the half. The Knights scores came on a 48-yard run by Derrick Jackson and a fumble return by Nate Ellis.
