He did throw an errant pass that nearly in the extra period that nearly prevented the Jazz from winning, but after fellow rookie Robert Whaley's putback of an Andre Owens miss ensured the victory Miles was able to savior the trey that finally went.

"Always in high school," he said, "I was thinking, 'I can do this in the NBA.' "

THAT GUY: Indiana's Sarunas Jasikevicius, who spurned a financially more-lucrative offer from the Jazz so he could play for the Pacers this year, had an impressive 18 points on 6-of-9 field shooting while playing shooting guard early on and going against Utah rookie Deron Williams at the point down the stretch.

"I'm beginning to feel comfortable," said Jasikevicius, who is making his NBA debut after a long and successful career in Europe. "But I'm still a long ways off."

MISC.: As expected, Jazz forward Carlos Boozer (strained left hamstring) sat for a second straight preseason game . . . Utah native Scot Pollard of the Pacers exited early with a strained left calf . . . Weber State product Eddie Gill had nine points in four off-the-bench minutes for Indiana . . . Jazz free-agent Owens, an Indianapolis native, had 20-plus family members and friends in the stands. So did Whaley, whose Michigan home is just a couple hours away . . . The Jazz started Milt Palacio and Devin Brown in the backcourt, with Kirilenko, Whaley and Mehmet Okur up front . . . Sloan said he'll probably make roster cuts soon, perhaps as early as today.
