Having lived in Arizona, I feel you've missed the problem with illegal immigrants. Through the 1990s, those working in construction were paid between $12 and $15 an hour. With the influx of illegal wages, it's now $6 an hour. Let's get after all illegal activity.

I am shocked and appalled by the reaction of this "Christian" state toward immigrants from Central and South America. They are a selfless people who come here to earn money for their impoverished families. Shame on you "Americans."

The Deseret Morning News cannot even bring itself to write the words "illegal immigrant." Soon the paper will have a Spanish section. John Huntsman, Orrin Hatch and this newspaper have sold our state out.

Are the people who oppose illegal immigration positively sure their own ancestors entered the United States legally? As an avid genealogist, I've found that several of my ancestors before 1900 evaded the U. S. Census questions about the country of their birth by responding "United States." After 20 years here, they responded "Germany."

Illegal immigration is the most dangerous thing we have to deal with, other than weather-related problems. Your attempt to create sympathy for them is totally irresponsible and dangerous. The upcoming elections will be a frightening awakening for those who refuse to deal with this problem.

The Bush administration will not control the border because it supports cheap labor. The border, as it is, serves as a filter because only the young, strong, uneducated lower class will run the gauntlet. This is the very type of worker needed by these employers.

Your assumption is that the low wages paid to illegal immigrants keep the price of services and goods low. Why not report on on the number of hospitals around the country forced to close because so many illegal immigrants use the emergency rooms and do not pay?

Austria, in the 1970s, had the lowest employment rate in the world, but had thousands coming over from Yugoslavia. These guest workers were given restricted privileges. They were not pampered and were expected to learn German. I suggest we have compassion for illegal immigrants, but realize there must be consequences.
