FARMINGTON Davis County commissioners announced Tuesday the start of a new discount program for prescription drugs.
Beginning today, free discount cards will be available in most county pharmacies, doctors' offices and government buildings. The cards, provided under a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo), offer an average discount of 20 percent off prescription drug purchases.
The cards are available to all county residents, regardless of current health coverage. They can be used at participating pharmacies throughout the nation, a list that includes most major retailers. The discount also can be used on pet medications.
"I'm so thrilled with this program," said Davis County Commissioner Dannie McConkie, a NACo board member. "This means an awful lot to the citizens of Davis County."
The discount cards were obtained at no cost by Davis County. A drug company, Caremark, is underwriting the costs of the discount under an agreement with NACo.
"We don't make any money," McConkie said. "It doesn't cost any money, but the beneficiary is whomever uses the drug card."
Discounts are determined by the type of medication being purchased. There are no restrictions on the number of times a person can use the card or the number of cards per family.
McConkie said the cards do not expire. More than 100,000 have been acquired for Davis County, the first county in Utah to obtain the cards.

Nationwide, 76 counties are participating with the NACo to administer the prescription drug discount program. The discount cannot be used in conjunction with other insurance coverage. Also, the discount may not work on over-the-counter drugs.
