BRIGHAM CITY — Despite trailing Box Elder by a touchdown at the half, there was little panic in the Mountain Crest locker room. It was just a matter of defensive adjustments, according to Mustangs' coach Mark Wootton.

With all the Xs and Os in order, Mountain Crest (7-1, 5-0) came out and dominated the second half by scoring 21 unanswered points. It was enough for the Mustangs to spoil the Bees' homecoming with a 28-14 victory.

"We always really have been a second-half team," said Brady Zimmerman, Mountain Crest quarterback.

After only passing for 18 yards in the first half on two possessions, Brady Zimmerman and the Mustangs' offense put together two drives that resulted in scores. The first was a 24-yard pass from Zimmerman to Brady Wootton, and the second was a 27-yard strike from Zimmerman to Cameron Webb.

Zimmerman finished 6-for-13 for 119 yards and two TD passes.

But the biggest play of the game came from the Mountain Crest punt-return squad in the third quarter with the game tied at 14. A bad punt snap forced Box Elder punter Broc Lindauer to scramble for the ball, and when he got it, he tried to throw it forward. Mustang Brad Hybee scooped up the ball and raced 20 yards into the end zone. Despite protests of an incomplete forward pass, the play was ruled a touchdown.

"Even when it was 14-14, we didn't have a lot of momentum. Then they get the bad snap and that turned the game in our favor," Mark Wootton said.

"That was the whole game," Zimmerman said.

The Bees (4-4, 1-3) controlled the game in the first half and built a 14-0 lead on a pair of short touchdown runs by Beau Baty. Both scores came on long, time-consuming drives, and the Bees were 8-for-8 on third-down conversions.

Box Elder never really got on track in the second half as the team only converted one third down and was held to 20 yards rushing for the rest of the game.

Bees' coach Wes Roesler said mistakes stung Box Elder in the second half.

"We came out and played errorless ball in the first half," Roesler said. "(Mountain Crest) put the pressure on us in the second half and we made mistakes. We always had a penalty. Things just didn't go right."

The Mustangs scored their first touchdown with 19 seconds to go in the first half on a fourth-and-one play where Wootton appeared short of the goal line. After considering all the angles, the field judge declared Wootton's one-yard plunge a touchdown. Wootton finished the game with 18 carries for 80 yards with a TD and caught four passes for 51 yards and one touchdown.

Mountain Crest now has a week off to prepare for a Region 5 title showdown in two weeks with Sky View.
