Winner: How much is a phone call from the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson worth? Just ask the kids at McMillan Elementary, who did chores, raised money from businesses and their parents, and even turned over their birthday cash to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Wilson had offered to call anyone who contributed $100 to the cause. In this case, he gave $18,000 of his own money to the McMillan fund, raising the school's total to nearly $43,000, and he agreed to call the school and answer questions from students.
As the kids learned, this is one way to "be true to your school."
Loser/Winner: The last thing a family-friendly film company needs is to learn that some of its DVDs were mixed up by a California distributer, and that some customers accidentally ended up with a film called, "Adored: Diary of a Male Porn Star." But HaleStorm Entertainment tried valiantly to make the best of things this week by offering $100 to anyone who got the other film by mistake, plus sending a $100 donation for each DVD to an anti-pornography group.
No word yet on what the folks who bought the porn film and instead got "Sons of Provo" are demanding.
