The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development is giving West Jordan $248,000 for the renovation of the city's Pioneer Hall.
The HUD grant, announced Thursday by Rep. Chris Cannon, R-Utah, will be used to fix up the historic building, built in the 1860s and dedicated by Brigham Young.
It was originally known as the Rock Meeting House, and throughout its history it has been used for many community activities and social events. The building, on 7800 South near the city's cemetery, is still open to the public today.
"Pioneer Hall is a part of Utah heritage, which has seen our state grow from a handful of pioneers to the great state it is today," Cannon said in a news release. "These funds will help make sure Pioneer Hall is still there for future generations and their families."
Pioneer Hall is on the National Register of Historic Places.
