Rep. Matheson's hiring of an attorney to send a letter to KSL management regarding Doug Wright's contemplation of running for Congress was politically foolish and just plain wrong. The attorney complains that Doug Wright, because he is a talk-show host, will have an unfair advantage in the media and that he could skew the debate in his favor simply because of his position. This is ridiculous. Doug Wright has been a talk-show host for a long time and to think that he should not speak his mind on issues of importance simply because his name has been mentioned as a political candidate is just unfair. What bothers me most though is that an incumbent member of Congress, who has tremendous advantages over a challenger, has decided to oppose a potential candidate not in a discussion of issues but by opposing whether or not Doug Wright can say anything at all regarding the issues. The letter's intent was clearly to chill the thoughts of Doug Wright as he prepares for and conducts his show.
