LEHI — With their 2-1 victory Tuesday night over the Lehi Pioneers, the Orem Tigers are girls soccer champions of Region 7.

The Tigers went into the game one point ahead of Springville in the standings and knew they needed a win to take home the league crown.

"It was nice having things in our own hands today," Orem coach Ed Louder said. "We knew we needed to go out and beat a very good Lehi team and that's what we did."

Anne Shallenberger put the Tigers on top 1-0 with a goal in the first half. Lehi tied the score 1-1 with under 20 minutes to play on a goal by Kiley Wardwell. The Pioneers had a chance to take the lead about 10 minutes later but a shot in close hit the cross bar and bounced a way.

"We played very well today and had them on the ropes and were within a few inches of it being 2-1 for us, but we just didn't have any luck today," Lehi coach Brett Bergholm said.

Orem's game-winning goal came with less than eight minutes remaining when Jamie Lyons fed Ashley Kamoe in close, and Kamoe was able to sneak a low shot past the goalie into the net.

"We feel like when we take the field that we can beat anyone," Louder said.

With the loss, the Pioneers finished tied for fourth spot in the region with Provo with 4-6 marks. The two teams will meet either Thursday or Friday to determine which team gets the league's final spot into next week's state playoffs.
