Failure to watch the clock closely enough resulted in the United State's women ski jumpers finishing 1-2 in the opening round of the Autumnfest at the Utah Olympic Park.
Lindsay Van of Park City won the event, followed closely by Abby Hughes, also of Park City.
Daniele Iraschiko of Austria was sitting firmly in first place after her first jump off the K-90, with a distance of 98.5 meters, which turned out to be the longest jump of the day in the women's event.
On her second jump, however, judges disqualified her. From the time the green signal light flashes a "go," jumpers have five seconds to begin their descent. Iraschiko failed to meet the five-second deadline.
Van was in ninth place after her first jump of 88 meters. On her second jump, her timing and liftoff were perfect and she sailed a distance of 97.5 meters, which pushed her into the lead. With style points she finished with a score of 236.
Hughes, a 16-year-old jumper from Park City High School, had jumps of 95 and 87 meters. Her final score was 226.
Third was Anette Sagen of Norway with a score of 223.
There were 27 women entered in the event.
Winner of the men's event, which was held off the K-120 jump, was Wojciecn Skupien of Poland. He posted two solid jumps of 122.5 and 120.5 meters. His final score was 229.
Second was Stefan Hula, also from Poland, with jumps of 115.5 and 124. His score was 223.
Third was Clint Jones from Steamboat, Colo., a member of the U.S. Jumping Team, with leaps of 116.5 and 122.5. His score was 222.
There were 57 men entered in this event.
Jumpers fought gusty winds all day long, which caused some delays and bothered some of the jumpers.
As a result, today's event was rescheduled. The men will begin jumping at 10 a.m. Once the men have jumped, the women will follow. Jumping was to have started at noon.
Tickets are $6 for adults. Children 12 and under are free.
