Question 4: There has been much talk about developing the city's Northwest Quadrant, which lies west of the airport. Some see this area as a place where tens of thousands of residents could eventually live in master planned communities. However, there are some concerns. Some want the area preserved as natural open space. Others say it's too costly to put homes way out there. Police and fire services in the city are already stretched thin and putting houses five miles west of downtown would further strap public safety and other services like public utilities. Still, proponents maintain the city needs to add more residents so it remains Utah's largest city and keeps it's political clout in the face of other rapidly growing municipalities. What's your vision for the Northwest Quadrant? If you favor development how will the city pay for it?

Answer: we need to first concentrate on the downtown area and local communities. We need to strengthen these areas first. The northwest quadrant should be developed in the future. We also need to make sure there are open spaces for parks, wetlands, etc. first. This is a project that will take several years of planning and finding ways of financing when the time is right. Currently I would not support it because I feel there are too many other issues that need to be addressed. Job security, community awareness, building a safe and unified community, making sure that there are enough programs to help those that are in need financially, physically and making sure our communities are safe by having a police satellite office in our district and more officers. There is a lot that needs to done in district one before we concern ourselves with growing fiscally or demographically.

Question 5: Some people are saying City Hall is hard to work with because Mayor Anderson and the City Council don't get along. Is the push and pull between the council and mayor a problem? Explain why or why not. Is the rift more the fault of the council or the mayor? As a council person will you seek friendly relations with the mayor or do you think city government works better if there is some tension between the two houses of government?

Answer: the position of the city council is to work as a check and balance system regarding the mayorship. There will always be a rift of some sort but is it a problem. I don't think so unless we allow it to be.

The rift, if there actually is one, is both parties fault. It takes two to make things happen both positive and negative. I think that both divisions need to work towards one goal and that is doing what is best for Salt Lake City and its communities. We are elected to represent the citizens and that is where we need to focus our attention. We need to not put our egos or personal agendas first. This is not what public service is about whether you are a councilman, mayor, governor or President. We accept a duty to represent our citizens and do what is best for them to protect them and their freedom of choice and rights. we are to make sure our city runs and remains operational and that we remain within our budgets. No government entity or person works best when there is tension. Sometimes it is necessary to make changes and yes not everyone will agree to those changes. Growth is always painful and there is never a true winner. So we all have to ask ourselves what is important the "I" or the team. It has been proven over and over again. The team is what is important, No man is an Island and we must always equip the man not man the equipment. If we follow these statements it always works out in the end. there are always boulders to move.
