The state Senate has started its own Web log where citizens can read and respond to lawmakers' comments.

The site — www.senatesite.com — could be the first state Senate blog in the country, says Senate majority administrative assistant Ric Cantrell, noting in a news release that although it was set up for the majority GOP senators, Democratic senators may use it.

The state's 29 senators and 75 House members have long been able to electronically interact with constituents through e-mail. But several legislators admitted in a recent hearing that they get so much e-mail they either don't respond at all — especially if it appears to come from a non-constituent — or their answers are significantly delayed.

A blog provides an immediate and public forum for senators to explain their points of view on issues and allows readers to comment, criticize and suggest possible compromises.

"We hope the site reflects the Utah Senate: classy, deliberative, informative, good humored, relevant and interesting," Cantrell said.
