BYU

MEN'S GOLF: After a second-place finish at the William H. Tucker Invitational last week, the BYU men's golf team is ranked No. 7 in the first coaches poll of the 2005-06 season. The Cougars enter the fall coming off a No. 4 finish at the NCAA championship in June — their best national showing in 19 years. Defending national champion Georgia claimed the top spot in the poll, and Mountain West Conference opponent UNLV, which won the Tucker Invitational, is ranked fourth.

WOMEN'S GOLF: At Albuquerque, N.M., BYU returned to competition Monday at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational and is tied for 12th place after the first round.

VOLLEYBALL: The No. 22 Cougars improved to 9-0, for the first time since 1987, on Saturday with a five-game win over Air Force in Colorado Springs. The victory marks the fourth straight match in which BYU has pulled out the win in the final game. The Cougars were led by junior middle blocker Lindsy Hartsock, who put down a career-high 21 kills and hit .529.

UVSC

VOLLEYBALL: Utah Valley State hosts instate rival Weber State in Orem for the first time today. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Activity Center. Weber State leads the overall series with the Wolverines 3-0, and is 1-0 against UV this season. Utah Valley State (4-6) fell to Utah in four games last week, while Weber State moved to 7-7 overall with two Big Sky Conference wins last week.

Cross Country

GRIAK INVITATIONAL: Josh Rohatinsky placed third, leading the No. 5 BYU men's cross country team to victory at the Griak Invitational, Saturday in Falcon Heights, Minn.

The Cougars placed three runners in the top 20. Following Rohatinsky's third-place finish were Chandler Goodwin, 16th, and Dustin Bybee, 20th. Josh McAdams and Nick McCombs were the Cougars' other scoring runners. BYU placed all five of its scoring runners in the top 50 to outscore Wisconsin for the men's title, 117-151.

Southern Utah's men, bolstered by season-best marks from all five scoring runners, finished 19th overall. The SUU women placed 25th in their first 6-kilometer race of the season. Sophomore Jess Baumgartner paced the men with the best-ever finish by a T-Bird athlete at the Griak, crossing the line 12th overall, in 24:37.

The Utah Valley State men finished in 20th place, while the women finished in 29th. The top Wolverine male runner was Joe Bendoski. The top female was freshman Kim Rowberry.
