Growth is major issue in southern Utah elections

5 St. George council candidates address the city's progress

Voters will get their chance to voice their opinion about districting under a ballot initiative in the November election.

Ed Baca, a retired law enforcement officer who unsuccessfully ran for a seat on the St. George City Council in 2003 and lobbied to be appointed to Isom's seat, said the current council should seek public opinion more often in its decision-making process.

"The ability of the political structure to recognize and prioritize public expectation by seeking and obtaining public input when deciding the future of the city needs to be enhanced," said Baca.

"The realization that growth has brought investment opportunities totaling millions upon millions of dollars requires the reinforcement of a code of ethics and accountability procedures," he said. "Proactive leadership from all elected officials acting to maintain and improve the quality of life for residents, while at the same time encouraging the development of the city, needs to be equitably balanced."

Warren Wilson, a commodities broker, said there is a glaring crisis in St. George government and that "this could be the most important election in St. George so far."

"The districting initiative on the ballot seems pretty harmless at first glance, but losing our ability to vote for five people on the City Council and to have five people accountable to each of us sets the stage for political boss rule. This is part of the far-left Democratic takeover machine."

Wilson said when people feel neglected, they oust the existing leadership and "seize control of all the city government resources to turn the town into a welfare state, low income housing utopia."

"Don't get me wrong. Of course we have to dilute the council membership to have less people who feed from the developer's trough," he said. "But let's not let the Socialist camel put his nose in our tent or he'll have us sleeping outside the tent by next election."
